Parental Alienation (PA)
Parental Alienation (PA) occurs when a parent displays alienating behaviors and attitudes
that destroy the child's relationship with the other parent. As Dr. Douglass Darnall
points out, there are different levels of severity, ranging from an occasional name
calling to a conscious and obsessive campaign to destroy the children's relationship
with the targeted parent.
Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)
The Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) is a very specific subtype of Parental Alienation,
which arises primarily in the context of child custody disputes. According to Dr. Richard
Gardner, PAS is made up of two very distinctive factors; (1) "brainwashing" by one
parent to denigrate the other parent and (2) unjustified, self-created, and denigrating
contributions by the child towards the target (alienated) parent.
When parents divorce or separate and a child is involved decisions about where the child will live, how the child will be raised, and the routine decision making about the child's upbringing is often a difficult and emotional issue for parents to sort out in the mist of their divorce.
